The enigmatic presence of Fernando Pessoa continues to guide us through Lisbon’s labyrinthine and poetic streets. Before embarking on my journey to the magnificent Portuguese capital, I made sure to read this poet’s masterpiece, a guidebook called “Lisbon – What the Tourist Should See”. By following his footsteps, I could delve deeper into the very same streets that inspired his exquisite verses, and experience the true essence of Lisbon.

There’s something truly magical about venturing into a new place – the chance to embrace the unknown, to immerse yourself in a fresh and vibrant world, and to uncover new truths about both the destination and yourself.
For me, a trip to Lisbon was a chance to pursue a long-held passion for the great poet Fernando Pessoa. Upon arriving in this wondrous city, I was struck by the sheer omnipresence of his influence. His image, footsteps, and verses were woven into the very fabric of the place, offering a glimpse into a world where art, culture, and history converge in beauty and wonder.

I wasn’t content with simply visiting his memorial house or sitting in the same cafes he frequented. No, I wanted to experience the city as he did. I wanted to see it through his eyes, feel the same inspiration that he did as he walked these same streets.

And so I set out on my journey, with a notebook and pen in hand, ready to capture any moment of inspiration that may come my way. As I walked, I found myself drawn to the same places he had been – the parks where he would sit and write, the cafes where he would sip coffee and ponder life’s great mysteries.

And as I sat, surrounded by the same sights and sounds that he had once experienced, I felt a deep sense of connection with him. It was as if his spirit was still alive in this city, guiding me towards the words that would pay tribute to his legacy.

I took the opportunity to express my admiration for the greatest fado singers of the city by penning a heartfelt poem in their honor. The haunting melodies of fado music have always resonated with me and reminded me of Pessoa’s poignant verses.

A visit to his statue is a must-do activity on any tourist’s list, but if you’re hoping to have a quiet moment with the poet, it’s best to visit him at night. During the day, the statue is usually bustling with tourists taking selfies. Don’t forget to share a cup of coffee and a poem with him!

With each passing moment, I felt myself becoming more and more a part of this city – of this world – that he had once known so well.

Through the eyes of Pessoa, I had found a connection to the world around me that I had never known before.
