Jazz music follows no rules. The beauty of jazz lies in improvisation and spontaneity. Unlike monarchies, the kingdom of Jazz imposed no rules or limitations. That’s why it’s hard to name one and only king or queen of jazz. Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald… All of these jazz masters are worthy of being called kings and queens.

One of the greatest kings of Jazz, Duke Ellington, was born on this day in 1899.
”Music is my mistress, and she plays second fiddle to no one.”
The word ‘music’ comes from the Ancient Greek term μουσική (mousiké), meaning (art) of the Muses. Music, therefore, is the art inspired by the nine mythical creatures who ignited the power of creation. Duke knew this very well. He knew that the Muse was his only mistress.
Here are some of the most inspirational words (without doubt whispered by some of the muses):
“Jazz is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.”

There are 2 rules in life:
Number 1- Never quit.
Number 2- Never forget rule number 1.
